The City of West Hollywood has a 30-year history being one of the most innovative municipalities in Southern California.

As part of the Innovation Team's WeHoX initiative, Fresh Conceptual (co-founded by Katharine Hargreaves and Anya Iverova) partnered with verynice design to build an interactive training program designed to promote efficiency and effectiveness in government while building capacity for innovation across departments.

We're not here to teach technology.

We're here to teach a completely new way of thinking.

Adults learn best by actively applying skills.

The City of West Hollywood wanted a flexible “Path to Innovation" that supported their departments in identifying innovation opportunities and using design thinking to prototype solutions -- both internally, and alongside constituents.

The goal of this structure is to reduce friction around risk-taking and support employees in pitching their validated ideas to the InnovationX team in order to receive funding.

The full curriculum incorporates product management tools, design thinking, and agile learning methods to help individuals take ideas from concept to completion.

The project was structured to provide a flexible and project-based learning environment

The 7-week curriculum combined synchronous and asynchronous learning modules facilitated by a team of experience instructors. These modules incorporated in-person trainings, remote video conferences, and a final day-long hackathon addressing an existing organizational issue.

Our experiential approach to teaching innovation is delivered through iterative application of skills, participatory design workshops, and personalized resources to support teams in their ongoing implementation.

An Agile framework supports the instruction and application of design thinking and product management methodology while our project-based learning environment focuses on collaborative leadership to drive organizational change.
